BEDROCK Academy of Mosaic

Located at 1401 W. Garfield Street in Seattle (under the Magnolia Bridge)

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Introduction to Contemporary Mosaic-explore the basic tenets of creating art from chunks of glass, as opposed to lines or brushstrokes.  We'll discuss the basic topics of substrates, adhesives, tesserae, and grouting an art panel for interior display within the first hour.  Spend the remainder of the class practicing how to leverage color, tonal value, and design strategies in your own small art panel project.  No prior experience necessary.

Glass on Glass Mosaic-explore the basic materials and techniques used to apply stained glass mosaic to glass substrates.  No prior experience necessary.

Mosaic Theory, Method, and Technique-spend the first class period learning the basic "mosaic grammar" of Roman and Byzantine mosaicists, and practicing glass tile cutting techniques.  You'll also gain experience with thinset cement bonding mortar.  The second class period will be devoted to you working on your own project.  Prior mosaic experience recommended; strong hands required.

Mixed Media Mosaic-learn basic principles for combining mixed media elements such that your finished creations contain tension and interest without being chaotic.  (I also call this course "Making Art That Doesn't Look Like Stew," and credit my friend Brooks Tower for the stew analogy.)  Prior mosaic experience recommended.

Mosaic on Mesh-learn how to fabricate large-scale mosaic on fiberglass mesh.  This class is more about the nuts-and-bolts of creating architecturally sound mosaic, as opposed to the artistic aspects of the medium.  Prior mosaic experience recommended.
