Knob-and-Tubescape, detail image

The Principle of Extrapolation: Take an "inspiring material"--in this case knob-and-tube wiring components--and surround them with more traditionally "mosaic" materials of similar color, texture, and essence. For example, I surrounded the cotton-wrap on the wires with riven chunks of grainy, dirty-cream-colored glass. Where the cotton is stripped away and the the tin-coated copper wire shows, I surrounded the tin-coated copper with metallic grey slate. The cross-sectioned tips of the wires, which show the copper, are hard to see, but I honored them with tiny bits of copper-colored Venetian mosaic gold. It's the only material in this artwork that isn't salvaged.
